The idea of a Knight Rider movie was first announced in March 2002 by Revolution Studios. They anocced that the film would be an adaptation of the orginial TV series and that Glen Larson (the orginial series creator) was hired to write the script. David Hasselhoff was also confirmed to appear in the movie as a Devon-like character, to assist the new Micahel Knight character. But Revolution Studios stated that they didn't want the car to talk. So the deal for the movie was scrapped. (Stated by David)
If you thought that was the end of the story well think again. In May 2006, it was annocced that the Weinstein Company had acquired the rights to adapt a knight rider movie from Glen Larson Orlando Bloom was offered the role of Michael Knight in September 2006, but he turned down the role because “he was never really a die-hard fan of the series.” In the Summer of 2006, a video of Glen Larson was broadcast to Knightcon '07 (a Knight Rider event) in the UK. For months there was no news on the film, until April 2007, where David Hasselhoff stated that the film was in development at Miramax and that he would have a cameo in the film.

The current status of the project is a bit up in the air. The details of the project are a bit limited, but what we know is it will be a re-imagining of Knight Rider. It wont have the K.I.T.T that we know, or Michael Knight, but rather a fresh start with a modern update of the Knight Rider story. It is not known what will be included in the history of Knight Rider, or where the movie will pick up.
Badge of support for Glen Larson's project:
